I had used ChatGPT a couple times just to check it out. And to be honest, it was not very good. My idea was that it would be a great writing tool, which it was. And it looked promising for students trying to cheat on their home works and professors were undecided or divided on what to do. Industries did not know how would their clients feel about the use of AI in their work. And research industry to this day is somewhat in the dark on what actually AI is, what it does at this time, what it can do, and where it is headed. I still hear the term “exposing your data to AI”, which bothers me. And I will tell you why when I know more.

As I am writing this today, my stance is very different.

Imagine an engineer without a laptop

Things have changed since computer and internet happened. Now ai is happening.

Now a days, I cannot really imagine an engineer who does not use a laptop. Just like I would not be able to imagine an engineer not using AI in 5 years. Our computers will be AI. So, the sooner you know what it actually is and how it can be useful to you, not just for your work or career, but for your life in general, the better. There will be products and services made for you using ai, but those products will be for mass population, and the product that you would want to use will cost you or your employer some pretty penny.

The fact that it is consuming a lot of energy and affecting the environment is part of the research and development around it. This not not just a computer science revolution, it is a cumulative scientific and engineering challenge. We need more research and development not to address only the environmental impacts but also clenergy(not a typo), social and economical impact and anything else you and I can think of. The impact of AI is very clear in the stock markets, but curious how much money is going into R&D to address its impacts.
